Quito, Ecuador/Quito.ca
This website is dedicated to all my friends, family and travellers in Canada. I have been living and travelling in Ecuador since February 2006. Since that time I come to learn a few great things about Ecuador. I travelled as far north a Tulcan, east as far as Cuyabeno Reserve, south as far as Guayaquil and west as far as Galapagos. Still so much to discover but I hope to provide as much information about Ecuador that will entice all travellers to come and visit this wonderful country.
Most of the photos on this website were taken by me except for the photo in the Coast section of this website. I've added videos and photos from; Galapagos, Amazon, Andes, Quito and with some cool people in-between. I've also have an opportunity helping a non-profit organization called CENIT put together a video to help under priviledged chlidren.
History
According to pre-Inca legend, the city of Quito was founded by Qitumbe, son of god Quitu, in honor of his father.
Quito Climate
The city's weather is often described as eternal spring, meaning balmy days 8-21 C, warm, direct sunlight cooled by light, steady breezes, and painfully picturesque clouds that usually gather for a short afternoon, shower, all capped by a cool - but not cold - darkness. Currently, I'm in the rainy season.
Quito Orientation
Quito, Ecuador iis about 40 kilometers long north to south and about eight kilometers across. The capitial is divided into zones: one for historical sights(Old Town -which I'm in now); one for visitors services, restaurants, and accomodations(New Town); and everything else.
Safety
With one of the highest concentrations of bodies in the country. Quito naturally has its share of crime. The diciest area in the part of the city frequented by tourists is the Mariscal Sucre neighbourhood of New Town. Increased police presence, including dog patrols, has helped clean this area up since the millennium, but it's still a good idea to take a taxi at night. Watch for pickpockets and bag-slasher on the trolley, bus station and in Old Town in general.
